There's Nothing Common About Common Descent Provisions

Today we're talking about Common Descent Provisions, which to me is arguably the most underrated and underappreciated hot sauce company in the game today. This company was founded by my very good friend Chris Bengston of Kansas City, MO in 2018 and he's been churning out some of the wildest creations you can imagine ever since. They don't call him Chilly Wonka for nothing. He's got a sauce that uses orange soda instead of vinegar. You read that right.

To celebrate the one year anniversary of its release, we're going to look at Bustahead Red Brain Strain Chili Pepper sauce today. As you can see below, the branding evokes very specific imagery. I've had almost every sauce CDP has made over the years, but this is my first time trying this one. I have to admit, I'm disappointed in myself for waiting so long.

First, lets get into the ingredients: Ketchup (tomato concentrate, distilled vinegar, high fructose corn syrup, salt, spice, onion powder), water, carrot, distilled white vinegar, apple cider vinegar, rice vinegar, brown rice syrup, sweet onion, red brain strain chili peppers, sea salt, garlic.

From the ingredients, its not hard to imagine what this would taste like. Its very much a spicy ketchup, but with a lot more texture than you'd expect. It pours a little thinner than traditional ketchup but the texture is visible as well. The red brain strain peppers hit hard and fast with a burn that gets a bit of the middle of my tongue and the roof of my mouth. Its a sharp intense burn like you'd get from the more widely known habaneros or scorpion peppers. What surprises me about the burn with this sauce is that while its a very hot sauce, the burn doesn't last as long as I've come to expect from sauces this hot. After about a minute, the burn lingers but its not nearly as intense as it was before. You definitely taste the ketchup. That is the overwhelming flavor. Often times, a superhot pepper can overwhelm the other flavors for me but I think Chris picked the perfect pepper for this sauce.

I would put the heat on this one at a 3 or 4 out of 10 on my scale. The flavor is a solid 7 out of 10.

For me, this sauce evokes an Americana vibe. It would go perfectly on burgers, meatloaf, or to dip your grilled cheese or French fries in. It could even be use as a way of kicking your tomato soup up a notch (or three).

Even if this sauce doesn't grab your attention, I urge you all to check out the incredible lineup and selection over at http://www.commondescentprovisions.com.
